Don’t buy Ring as a gift (or for yourself)

There is a long way to go in the discussion on privacy, facial recognition, etc…; and even further to go in terms of legislation; and it’s going to play out differently around the world. But there’s no reason to accelerate the surveillance state — and Ring is extra bad. Not only do they have previously-secret relationships with hundreds of police forces around the US; they mandate entry into their “Neighbors” program, and there’s no way to opt out. There are lots of other players in this space, but while most of them may not be exhibiting the same sketchy behavior that is Ring, there’s no reason to believe they’ll keep your private things private. There’s a real opportunity in this space for a startup that doesn’t stream your data back through their servers.
