Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota, VW

The interesting thing here is not just that Tesla is that far ahead (though that certainly is interesting); rather, it’s how they got there and what it means for the rest of the auto industry. “Most parts inside the Model 3 do not bear the name of a supplier. Instead, many have the Tesla logo, including the substrates inside the ECUs. This suggests the company maintains tight control over the development of almost all key technologies in the car.” This is in sharp contrast to the existing automotive supply chain, and it’s not at all clear how the traditional manufacturers can extricate themselves from their existing relationships — which means they’re a long, long way away from being able to be this innovative.
